Importing Video from HV30 to Final Cut Pro

I recently purchased a sweet Canon HV30 camera. I love it but importing video using Final Cut Pro was not easy to figure out. The beauty of FCP is that you can log and capture snippets of video rather than import huge chunks that you don’t need. Once you set the clip in an out points, FCP controls your camera and digitizes all your clips for you as a batch of individual files.

After I finally got it to work I noticed that there were quite a few posts on various boards regarding the settings for this camera and FCP. This is what worked for me. If you are having trouble importing video from an HV30 to Final Cut Pro, then this might work for you:

Canon HV30 – (Obviously make sure you have set it up correctly and set the timecode. FCP and all professional video software needs timecode to batch process.)
Final Cut Pro 6.05
Using a Firewire DV cable (Not the USB Provided by Canon)

In your Audio Vido settings (Final Cut Pro –>Audio/Video Settings)
Sequence Preset: HDV 1080i60
Capture preset: HDV
Device control preset: HDV Firewire
Video Playblack: Digital Cinema Preview-Main (Might be different for you depending on your monitor)

The HDV 1080i60 preset generally causes issues with the HV30, for some reason. So if it doesn’t work, use the apple intermediate codec, which seems to be working well so far.

  2. omg i love you for this!!!! although for england tis 1080i50.. :-)
